COPSEMAR has introduced a varietal improvement scheme tailored to the needs of its members. By adopting the necessary measures, a series of scheduled cross-breeding procedures is carried out between parental seeds displaying characteristics that are conducive to the creation of a suitable variety.

Populations are then generated from which the best lines are subsequently selected, employing various methods and tools: obtaining diplo-haploid lines, genealogical selection and grain quality parameter assessment. Our latest focus is a research project forming part of the ERA-PG call, the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme instrument. The project will involve all the leading public rice research centres in Spain and the French agricultural research centre, CIRAD, in collaboration with Copsemar and the Ruralcaja Foundation.

The aim of the project is to identify the principal genes involved in the long-term resistance against Pyricularia and to obtain advanced rice lines adapted to farming conditions in Europe. To which end, a multidisciplinary team has been put together and a number of different methods employed: evaluation of resistance against Pyricularia in the field and under controlled conditions, study of the gene expression patterns involved in defence mechanisms and marker-assisted improvement.
